Benjamin Moore Aura vs. Regal Select: Which Is Better for Your Calgary Home?

Jason Banman • September 4, 2026

If you are comparing Benjamin Moore Aura and Regal Select, the good news is that both are premium interior paints. The better choice usually comes down to the room you are painting, the colour you want, how much wear the walls will get, and how much you want to spend.

At West Springs Paint & Design, we help Calgary homeowners compare these kinds of details every day. For many homes, Regal Select is more than enough. Aura tends to make the most sense when colour richness, coverage, or premium performance matters more.

So… Which Is Better: Aura or Regal Select?

Benjamin Moore Regal Select is our go-to choice for many everyday interior projects because it offers excellent coverage, durability and washability at a lower price point. Aura is Benjamin Moore’s higher-end option and is worth considering when you want exceptional colour depth, strong hiding power, or a premium finish.

Coverage

Both paints provide excellent hide, but Aura has an advantage when you are making a significant colour change or working with deeper, richer colours. Benjamin Moore designed Aura as its top-tier interior paint with strong hiding performance and Colour Lock technology. Regal Select also offers excellent hide and works very well for typical repaints. For a bedroom going from one neutral to another, Regal Select may be all you need. Going from a dark wall to a dramatically different colour may make Aura's added performance more valuable.

Durability and Washability

This is an area where the difference is smaller than many homeowners expect. Regal Select is highly durable and washable, making it a strong choice for hallways, kitchens, living spaces and other areas that see regular use. Aura also offers premium durability and withstands cleaning and everyday wear well. If durability is your main concern, you do not necessarily need to move up to Aura automatically.

Colour Depth

Colour is one of the strongest reasons to choose Aura.

Aura is designed to deliver rich, consistent colour, which can be especially noticeable with dramatic blues, greens, reds and other saturated shades. Calgary homes can also receive a surprising amount of strong natural sunlight. If you have large windows and are choosing a deep feature-wall colour, Aura is often worth considering. For lighter neutrals, whites and everyday colours, Regal Select still produces an excellent finish.

Which Is Easier to Apply?

Regal Select is particularly user-friendly and provides good flow and levelling, which helps create a smooth, even finish. That makes it a great option for DIY homeowners as well as professional painters.

Aura is also a premium-performing paint, but good application technique becomes especially important with richer colours and higher-end finishes. If you are unsure which product and sheen will work best for your project, visiting your local Benjamin Moore paint store in Calgary before buying can help you make the right choice.

Best Rooms for Aura & Regal Select

For most Calgary homes, we typically use Regal Select for bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, dining rooms, and general interior repainting. Aura becomes especially attractive for feature walls, rooms using deep or difficult colours, premium renovations, or spaces where you simply want Benjamin Moore’s highest-tier interior finish.

Bathrooms are a slightly different situation. Depending on the room, Aura Bath & Spa may be the better choice because it is specifically designed for humid environments. We cover room-by-room recommendations in our guide to the best Benjamin Moore paint for Calgary homes.

Is Benjamin Moore Aura Worth the Extra Cost?

Aura is worth paying more for when colour richness, premium finish quality or stronger hiding performance matters enough to justify the additional cost. For many everyday repainting projects, Regal Select hits the sweet spot between performance and value.

That is why we would not automatically tell every Calgary customer to buy the most expensive paint. We would rather look at the room, existing colour, new colour, traffic, lighting and finish you want first. If you are deciding between Benjamin Moore Aura and Regal Select in Calgary, stop by West Springs Paint & Design. We can compare the two products with you, help you choose the right sheen and make sure you are spending more only where it actually improves the finished project.
