Choosing the Right Paint Finish for Every Room: Gloss, Eggshell, Matte, and More
When you’re about to refresh your home with a new coat of paint, the colour often gets all the attention. But the finish (the subtle shine or total lack of shine) matters almost as much.
The right paint finish can make a room feel smooth and elegant, hide imperfections, or stand up to daily wear and tear. At West Springs Paint and Design, we help homeowners match finish to function, because a finish that works for one room might flop in another.
Keep reading to learn the key differences among the five levels of paint finishes and which paint sheen is best for your space.

Flat/Matte Finishes
Flat and matte paints have virtually no shine, which helps them absorb, rather than reflect, light. That does two things: first, they make paint colour look richer and deeper. Second, they do a great job of hiding surface flaws like small cracks, uneven drywall, or patched holes.
Use flat or matte walls in low-traffic or low-visibility spaces, such as adult bedrooms, formal dining rooms, or ceilings. When the walls are smooth, and you want cozy-calm without spotlighting light or glare, flat/matte is often the go-to.
Downside: flat and matte finishes tend to be less durable and harder to clean, because their non-reflective texture can absorb stains and scuffs. They’re not ideal when walls are frequently bumped, rubbed, or wiped.
Eggshell and Satin Finishes
“Should walls be eggshell or satin?” We get this question a lot.
Eggshell has a soft sheen and is more washable and durable than flat paint. You’ll typically see it in living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, hallways, or other moderate-traffic areas. It gives enough light reflection to keep colours from looking dull, but not so much light that every bump shows.
If you want a little extra durability, satin (or low-lustre / soft-sheen) works. Satin increases washability and has a subtle glow, just enough to make cleaning easier while keeping spaces like entryways or family rooms warm and soft.
Semi-Gloss and High-Gloss Finishes
Semi-gloss and high-gloss finishes boast high reflectivity, easy cleaning, and high visibility.
They’re ideal for trim, doors, windows, cabinetry, and other surfaces that are frequently touched or need to resist moisture and dirt. Kitchens and bathrooms often benefit from semi-gloss thanks to their durability and wipeability.
That said, glossy finishes show every imperfection (bumps, brush strokes, uneven drywall, or roller marks), so prep and smoothing before painting is essential.
If you want sleek, clean lines and easy maintenance, say, for trim or cabinetry, high-gloss can be a dramatic, modern look. But on large wall areas, it typically feels too harsh unless the walls are flawlessly finished.
